The Silent Duke The 1797 Club Book 4 edition by Jess Michaels Romance eBooks

Ewan, Duke of Donburrow, has been mute since birth. He is terribly scarred because his father (and the rest of his immediate family) couldn't accept his condition and treated him horribly. His best friend since youth is Charlotte, now the widowed Countess of Portsmith. Charlotte has been in love with him forever and decides a holiday visit is the perfect time to seduce him and convince him of her love. She only married because Ewan rejected her before, and now she wants to change his mind.
I've read all the other books in the series, as well as a lot of other of the author's books, and I was looking forward to this one. Damaged heroes is a trope I like, but I couldn't really get into Ewan's character. He seemed to whine a lot. I get that he had a terrible childhood, but that point is brought up over and over. The first three-quarters of the story were about how he couldn't be with her because of his childhood alternated with sex scenes. Nothing against either, but that was pretty much all there was with very little story. Charlotte was only concerned with seducing Ewan so her character was pretty bland.
I also had issues with his mutism. While I get that Charlotte and Ewan had their own sign language, how it was written seemed unrealistic, that they could go on and on in long sentences while spelling each letter or having signs for common words. I realize this can be a challenge for a writer to describe this, but I found the descriptions often sloppy.
The ending was better, but it seemed rushed. We're set up for Matthew's story next, so I hope this was just an aberration, and his story is better.

The Silent Duke The 1797 Club Book 4 edition by Jess Michaels Romance eBooks Reviews

Ewan is a Duke who has survived a tragic childhood part of which is a result of his disability which is mutism. Charlotte is the woman who has loved him since they were small children. In years past she tried to tell him of her feelings but Ewan, for reasons of his own, ignored them.
Now Charlotte is a widow and she must decide whether or not to again make Ewan aware of her feelings, which have only grown, or to go back to the marriage mart and find a new husband.
Ewan has always loved Charlotte but has his own insecurities about his life and does not want Charlotte hurt.
Ewan may be a Duke, but he has enemies that could harm him and those around him.
They both must decide if they can go into the future without the other.
I enjoyed the story, and it’s the third in an entertaining series of books about a group of men who become friends as boys because of their societal rank. I recommend it to romance readers who enjoy some heat and longing with their hea.
This story has an interesting concept. Born mute, Ewan is abused both physically and verbally by his cruel father the Duke of Donburrow. As a child, his father planned to put Ewan in an asylum so he would not be a blot on the family name and would not inherit the title. Instead, his aunt and uncle took Ewan in and raised him as a son.
Charlotte met Ewan as a child and she was able to see beyond his silence to the boy beneath. She invented a sign language so they could communicate and she fell in love with him. As they grew up, her love grew stronger and finally before she married she went to Ewan hoping he loved her enough to marry her.
This story explores how hurtful words can be when spoken over and over to a child. Although he had a loving and warm relationship growing up with his aunt and uncle, his father's words were so ingrained in his head that Ewan can only consider himself to be "damaged". Five years later, Charlotte is now a widow and visiting Ewan for Christmas. She is determined to get him to realize that they could have a life together, That he is worthy of all the love she can give.
I had not read any of the previous books in this series and it isn't necessary to know what happened in those books to enjoy this story. The characters are well written and their pain and joy touches the reader. After many tears, this couple finally gets the happily ever after that they deserve.
FINAL DECISION This is a sweet little story as two friends navigate the hero's insecurities and fears and find their way to a happy ending. The conflict here is the hero's, but I enjoyed the interaction between these two.

THE STORY Ewan, Duke of Donburrow was born mute and abused by his father who wanted to commit him to an asylum so that one of his "normal" sons could inherit. The wounds inflicted by Ewan's father have scored deep. Charlotte, Countess of Portsmith, has loved Ewan forever. When he rejected her years ago, she rebounded into a loveless, but not horrible, marriage. Now widowed, Charlotte is determined to try again with Ewan.

OPINION This story was sweeter than I expected. These two love one another from the start and just have to work through the pain of Ewan's childhood to find one another.

Ewan is a good man. Abused as a child, he has managed to become a worthy gentleman. Charlotte is a woman who is determined to try and get what she wants finally. She comes to Ewan's house for Christmas determined to try and seduce him finally. There is no doubt that these two are meant to be together. The intimacy of their friendship and the closeness they feel is obvious from the start.

The emphasis in this story is Ewan's own growth. He has to make the change to be with Charlotte. I found that while this story isn't particularly long, its length works here where there isn't a tremendous amount of conflict to be resolved. There is one external drama that happens towards the end of the story, but by then most of the drama between the characters has been resolved.

The sweetness of the characters and the story made me really enjoy this book.

WORTH MENTIONING Virgin hero.
