"Young men often confuse war and adventure. They are not the same."
Tolbert “TM” Adams and Happy “Hap” Eyes grew up in the late 1880’s on a large South Texas ranch owned by TM’s father, Major Buford Adams. They were mentored by Hap’s Comanche parents, a freed Zulu slave, ranch hands, and given the best possible formal education. The young men were well prepared to take advantage of any number of opportunities. When they decided to travel to Southern Africa to hunt elephants and engage in the ivory trade, it surprised many.
In 1899 the British Empire’s agenda of colonial expansion across Africa from Cape Town to Cairo was threatened by two South African republics and war loomed on the horizon. Major Adams warned the two on the day of their departure, “Young men often confuse war and adventure. They are not the same. Avoid it if you can. Civil war veterans refer to their combat experiences as ‘having seen the elephant’. It is the one elephant you don’t want to encounter.”
But fate has a way of fouling the best laid plans. Shortly after their arrival in Cape Town, they are falsely accused of the murder of an English officer. When TM and Hap set out to prove their innocence, they are dragged into a war raging across the vast South African veld. Cast into a world of lies, deceit, and blood-shed, they must use all their skills and wits to survive. They went to Africa to hunt ivory bearing elephant but came face to face with the ‘apocalyptic elephant’ of death and destruction. As many young men must, they learn experience is an expensive commodity.

The Apocalyptic Elephant edition by Henry Spears Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I agree with the seven reviews, it's all that and more. I believe that anyone who enjoys a good book will like this one.
An interesting tale with lots of interesting history. I hadn't understood the parallels between our own Civil war and the Boer wars of Africa.
Great foundation for book in opening chapters, somewhat slow start, but pass that, great story with plenty of action and story pictures that drew me in. I'm ready for the sequel! Bring it on Henry!
This is a very fast paced adventure that allows you to savor the characters and how their unlikely lives intertwine. Henry Spears also did his history homework and puts it into play in a very real way showing how the people shape it more than the events. A very enjoyable read.
Great read.
Interesting character development. And fast paced action too.
Interesting historical references from late 1800s and turn of century with regard to Texas, South, and South America.
Spears' entrance into the fictional universe is a wonderful read– fast paced, engaging, and highly entertaining. His rich characterization of the two main figures make me want to know this "cowboy" and "Indian" in person. His lush and detailed descriptions of both South Texas and South Africa demonstrate his deep personal experience and knowledge of these primary settings for the novel. Pick it up, read it, and you'll find yourself wanting another. How about a sequel or prequel, Henry?
The history based narrative spanning two continents was entertaining and accurate.
The story line maintained my attention thurout the entire missive
