This book jumped all over the place, I could barely follow the story. It did nothing but jump around from scene to scene, character development was almost nonexistent because of the jumping around.

Becoming the Dragon A Young Adult Fantasy Saga The Dragon Inside Book 1 eBook Alex Sapegin Elizabeth Kulikov Reviews

I read constantly and its hard to find a book that I'm willing to buy the second one right after the first. Very good book and with buying
The book entitled Becoming the Dragon by Alex Sapegin was probably the best Dragon related book I have read in the last five years. I cannot wait to read the next four that are already available through LitWorld Digital Publishing. The tale was an interesting take on the thought that Dragons actually existed but lived on a different planet and that planet was once able to be accessed through a portal or portals on that planet. It is amazing that someone had not thought of that idea before. The author has several unique ideas that come out in the story that make the tale truly amazing and completely absorbing to the Fantasy reader/aficionado. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who likes to read about Dragons and magic. But, if I’m going to get you hooked like I was, I better give you a bit of a synopsis of the story I am recommending you read and why it is so amazing.

The story starts off with our main character, a boy named Andy, who was once hit by lightning and now cannot do certain things that other children his own age can do like play computer games and surf the internet. Why? Well, when Andy does, he causes the machine to either crash or severely slow down due to residual electrical impulses left over from his being struck by lightning. He also has issues with being out in thunderstorms due to possibly being struck again. So, Andy is slightly electrically charged. Andy’s father is a Russian scientist that works for the government on a secret project. Since Andy cannot do a lot of the typical computer or electronic things that other kids his age do, he reads voraciously. At his young age, I would say he has probably read more books than most 30-year-olds. The story hints at how many books Andy has read, and it feels like a large sum, his knowledge is above average for his age, and he learns really quick with an almost eidetic memory. This ability becomes very useful later in the story.

One day, Andy is sent out to deliver a file to his father at the military base. Instead of dealing with the gate guard, which Andy doesn’t like, he creeps around to an area of the fence that has easy access to the base. Andy sneaks in and crosses the testing field. Unbeknownst to Andy, his father is about to start a full test of his secret machinery. Andy’s father is certain that the machine will not work, since it hasn’t worked yet, and thinks that his superiors are rushing things, but he has to show results or be fired and disgraced. As the machine starts up, Andy is crossing the testing field and makes a connection in the system that no one expected. The machine starts to perform outside of parameters, and someone notices that there is a “kid” on the testing field. Andy’s father then realizes who that kid is, just as Andy is pulled through a portal to a destination that the scientists have no clue where it is or how to re-establish the link. All they know is that Andy is gone in the blink of an eye.

However, Andy is not dead, vaporized, or transmuted into a different life form. He is actually transported to somewhere else. At first, Andy thinks it is somewhere in America because of the geography and flora (mountains, plains, dirt, certain plant types). As the day goes on, Andy starts to think that he may have actually been teleported do a different planet because there are two moons. During his journey there, Andy finds out that there are more than humans that inhabit this strange planet; there are Orcs, Elves, and even Dragons! He discovers that the planet is named Ilanta and is captured because he kills a magician. As a result of killing a magician, he is sold into slavery and used as prey for a royal hunt. He foils the hunters and actually kills several while attempting to get away. Consequently, Andy is put into a zoo next to a captured Dragon. He eventually escapes and rescues the Dragon. However, in doing so, Andy is mortally wounded by a poison arrow. In order to save Andy’s life, the Dragon and his sorcerous Orc wife devise a way of transforming Andy into a new entity, leaving his old life and body behind, he will have to learn to become a Dragon and all that entails. Andy will have to leave everything in his old life behind and learn a new way to exist, make new friends (and enemies), while learning to use his new body and new powers and ultimately giving up any chance of ever going back home again… or will he?

As a whole, I give Becoming a Dragon by Alex Sapegin a 4 out of 4 for the quality of the story, entertaining characters, depth of the plot, and how it left me wanting to read more when I finished. I was also amazed to find out that the book won awards in Russia for YA Literature before being translated into English. I cannot wait to read the next four books in the series!
In the book Becoming the Dragon The Dragon Inside we meet Andy living a mostly normal teenage life. Andy attends school and deals with annoying siblings. After being struck by lightning, Andy finds he can no longer use electronics. His presence will render them useless. Reading books, and cooking gourmet meals for his family are common hobbies he enjoys. While on a walk one day, Andy sees a neighbor shooting bows and is immediately intrigued. Sergey, after some convincing, agrees to teach Andy archery. This scenario is unique in modern society and is one that educates. Andy enriches his mind without that crutch many of us, young and old, fall back on today. The things Andy occupies himself with have a practical application in life and require the physical use of his body. Encouragement to experience the world around us can be found in Andy's lifestyle.

During a storm, Andy's father needs notes from home delivered to his lab. Alex travels to his father's job, and something goes wrong. Andy somehow teleports to another land. Immediately, Andy recognizes the threats around him and makes sound decisions to protect himself. He hides intelligently from predators and loses himself among non-predators to survive.

Unfortunately, Andy's first meeting with the humanoids on Ilanta has a detrimental end. Andy is taken prisoner and is, subsequently, abused by the slavers. Because of his mistreatment, Andy discovers his developing mystic abilities. This magic ensures his survival and enables an escape with his new friend Karegar the dragon. When Andy finds himself in peril, the suspense is never overwhelming. There is violence, but it is never gory or over the top. I believe this is one reason it would be a good fantasy novel for a young adult reader.

A fatal poisoning Andy undergoes during captivity cannot be healed. Andy discovers he can take part in a risky procedure to convert himself into a dragon. At first, I found this too much like a Hail Mary pass. In the end, however, I accepted the events with little doubt. The resolution to become the dragon was thoughtful and well laid out. Honestly, it was Andy's transformation, and his following training, that held most of my attention. The events until this point were gloomy, but with Andy's rebirth comes hope.

Becoming the Dragon The Dragon Inside is the first in a series of novels by Alex Spegin and Elizabeth Kulikov. Novels building a world can be an uncertain thing for me, especially in a fantasy setting. Many authors seek to envelop the reader in their world, and rightly so. I have a tendency, however, to dislike excessive explanations of said world. And when jumping between multiple characters, sometime plot-lines are difficult to keep straight. I experienced a bit of that here. When the description of a guard's armor reaches two paragraphs and approximately 300 words, that is too much for me.

I did have a genuine concern for Andy during his travels. Once united, Andy and Karegar held my interest. The entire novel is well edited no errors caught my attention. The issues I found, regrettably, seem to overshadow my enjoyment of the story.
This book jumped all over the place, I could barely follow the story. It did nothing but jump around from scene to scene, character development was almost nonexistent because of the jumping around.
